DYNAMICS OF HYDROBIOLOGICAL PROCESSES, DETERMINING CONDITIONS OF JUVENILE SOCKEYE SALMON FEEDING IN PELAGIC ZONE OF AZABACHYE LAKE IN 2006–2010

SOCKEYE SALMON, PLANKTON, BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC CONDITIONS
Hydrological and hydrochemical regimes, dynamics of stock abundance and biomass of plankters, including crustaceans, which are dominant component in juvenile sockeye salmon feeding, were characterized on the base of hydrobiological studies, carried out in pelagic zone of Azabachye Lake in 2006–2010. It was found that juvenile sockeye salmon had favorable conditions of feeding during mentioned period in the pelagic zone, and the indication of that is the highest for recent 15 years body weight of the juvenile migrants in 2007–2008. The rich stock of the forage plankters in the lake was result of sufficient food supply for the plankters and abundance decrease of juvenile sockeye salmon and its principle concurrent — residential threespine stickleback. It is suggested that an increase in the abundance of plankton-eating fishes in the pelagic zone since 2009 can cause decrease of the biomass of the plankton crustaceans and consequent decrease of juvenile sockeye salmon size and weight.

ESTIMATION OF DANISH SEINE FISHING EFFICIENCY FOR SOME SPECIES OF CRAB ON THE DATA OF COMPARISON, MADE BETWEEN RESULTS OF TRAWL AND DANISH SEINE TRIALS

Fishing efficiency for red king crab, Bairdi snow crab and kegani was estimated on the base of data, obtained as a result of making trawl and Danish seine parallel trials and suggested methods how to collect and analyze primary data. The fishing efficiency 40,3/39,3 m for the Danish seine with the warps 2х1500 m, found for red king crab, is proposed for the use in estimation of stock abundance of hydrobionts.

THE ISSUE OF APPLYING THE APPARATUS OF THE PRODUCTION FUNCTIONS    IN STUDYING THE KAMCHATKA’S FISHING INDUSTRY

The article presents an attempt to use mathematical tools of the production functions to describe the patterns of fisheries in Kamchatka. It is found that, by available data, it may use only the most elementary one-factor  production function, and its coefficients have been defined. A conclusion has been made that there is need to continue research in this direction.

ABOUT DEPRESSION OF STOCK ABUNDANCE IN SOME POPULATIONS OF PACIFIC HERRING CLUPEA PALLASII VAL.

PACIFIC HERRING, DEPRESSION, THRESHOLD LEVEL OF STOCK ABUNDANCE
The term “stock abundance depression” has been discussed in view of its use for some populations of Pacific herring. All the analyzed populations  demonstrated traits, characterizing the state of depression, including misbalance in the age composition of spawning stock, slowing down linear and weight growth, specific for the periods of minimum stock abundance. The threshold level of  the stock abundance of mature individuals, estimated  for herring of Korfsky and Karaginsky Gulfs to figure out potential risk of  depression on exceeding the level, is 127 millions. This amount is 18% from the optimal stock of spawners for given population.

REVIEW OF GREENLINGS (GENUS HEXAGRAMMOS) BIOLOGY IN KAMCHATKAN AND ADJACENT WATERS

Spatial and bathymetric distribution, environmental living conditions, life history characteristics (size and weight, age and growth, sexual maturation, fecundity, spawning ecology and behavior, feeding habits and trophic role), and resources of four species of the genus Hexagrammos — rock greenling H. lagocephalus, masked greenling H. octogrammus, whitespotted greenling H. stelleri, and fringed greenling H. superciliosus have been reviewed.  Both common features of biology inherent to all species and differing peculiarities of them as well have been revealed. It is shown that the most eurytropic fish among far-eastern greenlings is H. stelleri — the species, tolerant to very wide range of physical conditions of environment, including low water temperature and salinity, and high variety of grounds. Rock greenling is the largest and most abundant representative of the genus. Its habitat is restricted generally by purely oceanic waters with rather high temperature and salinity, strong currents and stony grounds covered by kelp.

We propose a decomposition of reducing the number of equivalent and conflicting factors affecting the catchability and allows them to explore independently. Describes how the selection and spread of odor baits. Investigated structural elements hook affecting catchability longline. Shows the change in catchability longline of installation, speed and direction of flow.

NEW DATA ABOUT WALLEYE POLLOCK (THERAGRA CHALCOGRAMMA) SPAWNING AND STOCK BIOMASS AT THE KOMANDORSKY ISLANDS

Based on the ichthyoplankton surveys, conducted KamchatNIRO in April 2009–2010, a new data about walleye pollock distribution, total eggs abundance at the Komandorsky Islands. The main spawning grounds were located in the strait between Bering and Medniy Islands at the depth 80–100 m. Spawning lasts from the beginning of March till the end of May with peak in the middle of April. Nowadays walleye pollock spawning stock biomass in this area is on the high level — about 340 th. tons.

ABOUT DYNAMICS OF PACIFIC HERRING SIZE COMPOSITION AT THE SHELF OF THE BERING SEA, ON THE DATA FROM THE BOTTOM TRAWL SURVEYS

HERRING OF KORFSKY AND KARAGINSKY GULFS, BODY SIZE COMPOSITION, BOTTOM TRAWL SURVEYS
Basing on the data of bottom trawl surveys we have analyzed the seasonal and depth-dependent dynamics of Pacific herring size composition at the shelf of Karaginsky, Korf and Olutorsky Bays (the Bering Sea) in September-December for 1976–2005. We have it demonstrated that the percent of big individuals and the average length in the catches was increasing with more depth of trawling.
Seasonal changes of the Pacific herring size composition depended on feeding migration. In September in Korf and Olutorsky Bays the catches generally consisted of immature individuals, because majority of mature fishes was feeding in the other area that time. In October the immature herring  still stayed in Korf Bay and dominated in the catches at the depth <100 m in Karaginsky and Olutorsky Bays. Nevertheless, mature herring dominated at the depth >100 m in Karaginsky and Olutorsky Bays, because the fishes already returned there after their feeding for wintering. In November the percent of the mature herring in the catches increased everywhere. In December herring aggregations demonstrated the differentiation as next: the big mature individuals and a small part of juvenile fish migrated deep down, whereas the immature herring kept feeding at the depth <100 m.
